The League of California Cities has selected the City of Sonora as a 2000 California Cities Helen Putnam Award Winner. The 2000 Award winners were honored at the League's Annual Conference, September 7-9, 2000 in Anaheim. The City of Sonora received the Award in Excellence in the category of Economic and Community Development for its City of Sonora Service Center. The City of Sonora's Redevelopment Agency purchased an abondoned PG&E service center in 1997 and has rehabilitated it into a showcase for innovative community development. The four acre parcel now has three separate uses, each representing a solution to what was once a city problem. In a building on the north end of the property is an education center benefitting Welfare to Work program. In the middle section is the re-located City of Sonora Public Works Department, and on the south end is a 250 space parking lot which provides off-street parking for students who attend the nearby high school. The project is an outstanding example of practical yet innovative land use!
