Tuolumne County

Sonora is the only incorporated city in Tuolumne County, it is the county seat and the largest town in the tri-county area. Looking north on Washington Street - Sonora It is a bustling, modern city with school, city, county, state and federal offices represented. It is also a very small town that meanders over rolling hills about 20 blocks long and about 6 blocks wide.

Sonora is an excellent representation of mid-1800's architecture. Even though the city center houses the courthouses, city and county government, it is also filled with museums, antique stores, art galleries, cute little sandwich shops and ice cream parlors. Sonora is the cultural center of the area, where you'll find the Central Sierra Arts Council and two of the four live theatres.

Even though Sonora is the destination for government, culture and shopping for Tuolumne, Calaveras and Alpine counties it is still very small, cute and quaint. You may be surprised that so much is packed into such a small space and still leaves a feeling that it is so spacious. The signposts at the edge of town still say the population is less than 5,000. We expect the new census will push us over that point but not by much.
